The Acting for Film program for the BA and MFA degree programs provides thorough, rigorous training designed to develop your individual talents and give students the tools, experience and discipline necessary for a successful film acting career.  

Over the course of the program, students acquire the real-world experience and professional technique needed to perform at the highest artistic level while negotiating the technical demands and logistical concerns of the average film shoot.

Seattle Film Institute’s Acting for Film program prepares students to compete in what is widely considered to be the single most competitive profession on earth.  The special attention we pay to the auditioning process has resulted in a large amount of our graduates being signed by Screen Actors Guild franchised agents upon graduation.

Additionally students who earn their MFA or MA degrees at SFI obtain the producing skills that are essential to initiate projects and see them through to completion and have the academic credentials necessary to pursue teaching careers.

Curriculum Overview

The Acting for Film curriculum consists of a series of classes designed to train a successful actor. 

Acting for the Camera establishes the foundation of all good acting. Once the foundation is established, the students’ comfort zone is expanded by dealing with the challenges inherent to acting on a set. 

Auditioning is a related but separate skill from acting.  In the program, students work with a professional casting director in developing audition technique and protocol. 

Improvisational Acting trains students to react to what is truly happening in a scene; not their preconceived notions of what’s going to happen in that scene. 

Movement and Voice & Speech work in conjunction to keep the actor’s instruments in perfect tune, with a particular emphasis on developing the ability to identify and release physical and vocal tension. 

Text Analysis provides students with a framework for discovering the writer’s clues about the characters internal and external circumstances. Whether an action is deliberate or not.  Whether its Shakespeare, a modern playwright, or a screenwriter, an actor needs to decode clues within the script and incorporate them into the performance. 

Voiceover prepares students to pursue the multiple opportunities a rapidly expanding area of the acting profession including radio and television commercials, narrating audio books or documentary film, providing the voice for characters in an animated film or video game.
