Building Digital Worlds in a Studio Environment

The Digital Arts, Animation & Game Design concentration for the BA and MFA degree programs provides a comprehensive overview of media arts, animation, and game design principles where students learn the development pipeline from concept to completion. Students complete projects in a hands-on, studio environment which is industry-focused and practical. Learn foundational skills, then choose an area of specialization and build your portfolio and demo reel.

Program Highlights

Storytelling is at the heart of the Digital Arts, Animation, & Game Design program. Students will develop the technical tools and production techniques to create strong narratives. Students choose to focus on 2D or 3D animation or game design or develop a blended skill-set. At graduation students will have a demo reel that displays command of their craft, personal artistic voice and visual style.

Career Opportunities

The Digital Arts, Animation, & Game Design concentration prepares you for entry-level positions in a range of industries such as filmmaking, game design, Visual FX, and motion graphics and these skill-sets are applicable to many additional industries including architecture, interior design, advertising, and web-design.  Specific positions include:

  • Game modeler
  • Game animator
  • Motion graphics artist,
  • Visual effects artist,
  • Level designer, and
  • 2d or 3d animator

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be increased opportunities to work in video game design, special effects, web animation, advertising and e-learning, in addition to opportunities in traditional film animation.  In fact, BLS predicts video games, movies and television will be the three biggest career growth industries, as well as increased demand for animation on mobile devices and tablets.

Curriculum Overview

Over the course of their studies students build a demo reel and portfolio of work and are prepared for entry-level positions in a variety of fields, including: film, television, advertising, game-design, visual effects, and motion-graphics.  The Digital Arts, Animation and Game Design curriculum covers a broad range of technical and creative skills with wide applications, including:

  • Digital imaging techniques
  • Storyboarding and animatic techniques
  • 3D Modeling and animation
  • Motion graphics and visual effects
  • Basic coding language
  • Game design techniques
